PARAMETRIC TEXTURE STUDY

One form, six textures, every parameter live.

A curvature-continuous shell designed in Grasshopper and rebuilt for the web, so every dimension and texture can be changed in real time. Each texture is driven by a field rather than drawn by hand: it grades across the cap and fades to zero at the edge, so the surface meets the wall cleanly at any setting.

The textures were created in Grasshopper, while the interactive code hosted on GitHub was developed with the assistance of Claude using .ghx files.

THE FORM

A single-span degree-5 dome, cut by a horizontal plane to define the cap. The wall is swept from the cap edge to a flared base through profiles that match the dome's curvature, giving a curvature-continuous joint with no visible seam. Length, width, dome height, crown fullness, cap depth, base flare and shoulder tension all stay live.

SIX TEXTURES

Graded perforation, ribs, reaction-diffusion, wave, faceted and ripple, all on the same cap and all fading to zero before the edge.

METHOD

The form and textures were built as a Grasshopper definition, then translated to JavaScript and Three.js so they run live in the browser.

Perforation: hole size graded by distance to the cap centre and an inset edge ring. Reaction-diffusion: a Gray-Scott simulation grown on the cap. Ribs, wave and ripple: height fields with an edge fade. Faceted: graded Delaunay facets that shrink toward the edge.
